List of Items allowed and prohibited while air travel
Dubai International (DXB), the world’s busiest airport, warns visitors not to pack spare batteries or power banks in their checked luggage because they are “safety hazards and forbidden”.
“It is advisable that you put them (extra batteries or power banks) in your hand or carry-on baggage instead,” DXB tweeted Monday. “Security check is a fundamental aspect of modern aviation travel,” the organisation stated on its website. Protecting everyone is essential.
Travel tips
DXB advised:
- Carry loose goods like a phone, wallet, watch, and keys in your handbag.
- Keep a laptop handy. At the scan, put your belt with a metal buckle and heels in a security tray.
- Put liquids in a transparent, resealable bag in your carry-on. Each liquid must exceed 100ml.
- Medication, baby food, and special diets will be exempted throughout your vacation.
Items allowed/prohibited
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority allows the following as carry-on and checked-in baggage:
- Lithium-battery-equipped luggage non-removable batteries. Batteries cannot exceed 2.7 Wh or 0.3 g lithium metal (Watt-hour). Checking luggage requires removing batteries. Battery removal requires cabin storage.
- Non-flammable, non-toxic gas cylinders used for mechanical limbs. If needed, spare cylinders of a similar size for the voyage.
- Hydrocarbon gas cartridge-containing hair styling equipment, one per passenger or crew member, with the safety cover securely attached over the heating element. Aircraft hair-styling equipment is prohibited. Hair styling gas cartridges cannot be carried on or checked.
Lithium batteries are found in portable electronic devices (PED) such cameras, mobile phones, computers, and tablets, as well as medical devices like portable oxygen concentrators (POC). Lithium-metal batteries must exceed 2 g of lithium metal, while lithium-ion batteries cannot surpass 100 Wh. Checked bags must have devices turned off and protected. Maximum 15 PED per person.
- Lithium battery-powered electronic gadgets: Lithium-ion batteries for portable (including medical) electronic equipment, 100 Wh to 160 Wh. Lithium metal batteries over 2g but under 8g for portable medical electronics. Checked bags must have devices turned off and protected.
- Non-radioactive pharmaceutical or toiletry goods (including aerosols) including hair sprays, perfumes, colognes, and alcohol-containing medicines; and non-flammable, non-toxic aerosols with no supplementary hazard for sporting or residential usage.
- Medical oxygen or air cylinders. The cylinder cannot exceed 5kg gross weight. Liquid oxygen transfer is prohibited.
Only carry-on items are allowed
- Spare/loose batteries, such as lithium, non-spillable, nickel-metal hydrid, and dry batteries for portable electronics, must be carried in carry-on baggage. Power banks are spare batteries.
- Individually protecting these batteries prevents short connections. Lithium metal cannot exceed 2g. Lithium-ion batteries cannot exceed 100Wh. 20 extra batteries are allowed per person. 12V or less, 100 Wh or less non-spillable batteries. Two spare batteries are allowed per person.
- Fuel cell-powered portable electronics (e.g. cameras, cellular phones, laptop computers and camcorders)
- E-cigarettes, e-pipes, and other personal vaporizers with batteries must be individually protected to prevent accidental activation. Smoking is prohibited on planes.
- Mobility aids or battery-powered wheelchairs with lithium-ion batteries whose design doesn’t protect the batteries.
- Mobility aids can only be checked in: Wheelchairs with no spillable wet, nickel-metal hydride, or dry batteries
- Wheelchairs or other mobility equipment with spillable or lithium-ion batteries (see 2.3.2.3 and 2.3.2.4 for details).
- One medical or clinical mercury thermometer per individual in its protected case.
